The betrayed Welsh village let down, deprived and cut off that people won't give up on

I first learned about some of the challenges in Caerau following a Welsh Government report from 2019, which named the cut-off community as being one of ten areas described as being “deep-rooted” in deprivation, and data shows it has got worse over time. I decided to visit the area to talk to residents about what life is really like here, and discovered that there are a number of factors making the village stand out.

When I visit Caerau, one lady called Sara Harrison is sitting outside her house on Hartshorn Terrace, chatting to neighbours. She has lived there for three years with her two children, and although she loves the location, has found the area a difficult place to be. Sara said: “Sometimes it does feel like this area gets forgotten about a bit.”
