My vision for news: I see news as an ever-evolving conversation between audiences, journalists, and speakers. The focus can shift from the story itself to how it comes together. But if journalists and newsrooms want to keep this conversation alive, we need to connect more with the everyday lives and experiences of the people we’re reporting for.
In practice: Reporting that starts from people’s lived experience, builds trust through transparency and proximity, and follows stories as they circulate. Basically, making it something people can understand more deeply. After many conversations with editors about connecting with news-avoidant or hard-to-reach audiences, I realised there was a need for clearer thinking on how to approach news in a busy, social media-driven world. That’s why I developed the ERC Method - a framework for journalism that embeds stories in people’s lives, makes them relatable, and follows how they circulate. It’s designed to build trust, relevance, and connection with audiences who are often overlooked.
Storytelling, designed for the social media generation
About me: I’m Beth, a UK-based storyteller working across podcast, digital and social platforms. I love working on stories about how people are connecting and adapting in a constantly changing world, (especially younger audiences who are reshaping how news is found and understood). Here, you’ll find a selection of my recent stories and projects. If you’d like to collaborate, commission a piece or simply say hello, you’re always welcome to get in touch.
How I got here: I grew up in a single parent household, where my Mum would listen to the news every day, saying it connected her to a world outside of daily life. This raised me with the knowledge in my early years that looking at the bigger picture would often help to make sense of the smaller things. Just as art and music create moments of wonder, and science works to solve the problems ahead of us, real-life stories are often the most vital solutions to help us understand the world in front of us. Later, when I was 16, I saw first hand how a local news story can develop into a narrative which starts real conversation and cultural shifts, as my younger sister led a nationwide campaign that became a major news story. Seeing exactly how strong reporting can carry a conversation from one household into the public eye, was what made me decide that I wanted to be part of this service in as many ways as possible.
What I do: I’ve worked in storytelling for over four years since graduating from Liverpool John Moores University with a First Class degree in journalism. I believe the key to creating good stories is staying open to new possibilities and listening to the world around you. I am obsessed with developing my style of working to stay in line with how media is consumed. This is because, I believe that while people want to understand the world, they often feel overwhelmed or disconnected. My aim when telling stories is to look at where the gaps are, and assess which narratives hard-to-reach audiences are most interested in.
Previous work: My most recent role as an Under 35s writer for WalesOnline allowed me to develop my own voice as a reporter for demographics becoming disengaged with news, from stories which affect audiences on a smaller scale, to writing timely pieces based on trending news and opinion articles which start a conversation. My pieces have reached millions of readers, and have been featured on news sites all around the UK, from regional websites such as the Manchester Evening News to national titles such as The Mirror, OK! and more.
